What to look for
Heat pump installers fit air-source (ASHP), ground-source (GSHP), and hybrid systems, usually with associated radiator upgrades, hot-water cylinders, and smart controls. MCS certification of installer and product is mandatory for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. Quality of heat-loss calculation and emitter sizing dictates whether the installation actually works in winter.
- MCS-certified installer with current expiry date
- Heat-loss calculation (room-by-room, MCS-compliant)
- Emitter sizing tied to flow temperature target
- RECC or HIES consumer-protection scheme membership
- Boiler Upgrade Scheme paperwork handled
- Realistic SCOP estimate disclosed (3.0+ should be the design floor)
Typical pricing: £8,000-£14,000 typical ASHP install (after BUS grant), £18,000-£28,000 GSHP, +£1,500-£4,500 radiator upgrades (UK 2026)
Regulator / certification to look for: Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), RECC, HIES, Gas Safe Register (where displacing gas)
